Beryl Flo Jackson

Beryl Flo Jackson was born on January 14, 1931 in Roadside, Jamaica, in the parish of St. Mary. Her mother Eulalee Cousins was a seamstress and her father Leopold Jackson was a motor mechanic.

Beryl was able to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a teacher when she received a scholarship to attend Mico Teacher’s College in Kingston. After graduating from Mico with a diploma in education, she taught for several years at Allman Town Infant School for several years. Little did Beryl know, the shy first-year student sitting in her classroom in 1954 would one day grow up to be her daughter-in-law!

She moved to the United States in 1967 and then spent the next 19 years teaching at various public and private schools in New York. During that time, she made a comfortable home for herself in Brooklyn; and on many occasions provided housing to family and friends who migrated from Jamaica and England.

In 1985, Beryl relocated to Stone Mountain, Georgia, to be closer to her son and her grandchildren. This move was advantageous because it also allowed Beryl to further her work in special education. She served as an assistant teacher at Decatur High School for several years, and then later worked as a paraprofessional at the Elaine Clarke Children’s Agency in Chamblee, from which she retired in 1996.

Beryl was a member of the Anglican faith and regularly attended St. Matthews Anglican Church in Allman Town in Kingston. For more than 30 years, she attended the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross in Decatur, and was a member of the Young at Heart, with whom she enjoyed dining out and traveling.

Beryl will be remembered as a caring, loving grandmother who enjoyed telling (and retelling) stories and jokes to her grandchildren. She was also a devoted mother, mother-in-law, and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter-in-law Dorothy; her grandchildren Gillianne, Julian, Kimanne, Abijah, Daniel, and Leanne; her greatgrandchildren Dante, Malik, Bayleigh, Aaron, Ethan, Kendal, and Joshua; and a host of nephews; nieces, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her brothers Herman Bingham and Carl Jackson, and her son Gilbert Dell Fairweather.
