Ianthe "Ann" George

Ianthe (Ann) Adamantopoulos George, age 96, of Decatur, Georgia, passed away September 28, 2017. She was born in Sinope, Turkey on September 26, 1921 to Demetrios and Kornilia Adamantopoulos. She and her family immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1922. She lived in Astoria, New York until she was 24 years old. She moved to Miami, Florida in 1945 where she met the love of her life, James (Jimmy) George. They married on October 10, 1947.

Ianthe is survived by her daughter Evangeline George Sowers and her husband William Sowers. She has two grandchildren who brought her much joy and laughter, Charles Sowers and Alexandra Sowers and fiancé Jacob Hoefer.

Ianthe loved to do anything with her hands; she was an accomplished seamstress and a wonderful cook. Her Greek family recipes have been used by many friends and relatives and were always delicious. She loved to be around her family and friends, and was an active member of her church in Miami, St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, where she was a founding member. She retired in 1984 as dental office manager after 25 years of work.

Ianthe and Jimmy moved to Atlanta in 1984 to be close to their daughter and her family. In their golden years, Ianthe and Jimmy were active grandparents, taking care of Charles and Alexandra every day after school and were always present for all their activities and family events.

Jimmy preceded her in death in August 2009 and they are together again at last. Their marriage of 62 years was a testament to their love and commitment to each other.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 1, 2017 from 5 - 7:00 pm at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home & Crematory. The funeral will be held Monday, October 2, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery.
