Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Griffin

Mrs. Mary “Betty” Griffin passed away in Tucker, Georgia on March 2, 2018 at the age of 93.
Betty is survived by her son James and his wife Trudy Griffin, granddaughter Heather, great grandchildren Katelin and William of Ridgeland, Mississippi, and her daughter Mary and her husband Jim Farmer of Decatur, Georgia, and grandchildren Ben and his wife Patricia Farmer, Bobby, James, fiancée Jessica Teal, all of Atlanta, and her brother Joe and his wife Glenda Meadows of Graysville, Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her husband Woodrow Wilson Griffin, her parents William Ernest Meadows and Mary Elbon Meadows, her brother Bill Meadows, and her sister Louise Tibbetts.
Betty was born January 19, 1925 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She graduated from Central High in Chattanooga and often shared fond memories of growing up around her father’s Chattanooga dairy. After she married Woody, they moved from Chattanooga to Aiken, South Carolina to join family in the operation of Griffin Tire and Appliance. Betty worked with the family business as the bookkeeper in the store for many years. She and Woody were very active in St. John’s United Methodist Church, involved with lay witness work on weekends and during summers at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina.
In 1984, Betty and Woody moved to Cartersville, Georgia. After his death in 1986, Betty remained in Cartersville until she moved to Decatur, Georgia in 1994, where she began many years of treasured time with all of her family, new friendships, church life and volunteer work at Decatur First United Methodist Church. Betty also served as a dedicated volunteer at the United Methodist Children’s Home in Decatur, where she enjoyed working weekly with others to prepare for their fundraising flea markets. She was known as Granny to many and will be remembered not only for the most delicious homemade cookies and pimento cheese that she shared with all, but also for her caring, nurturing presence to everyone as she shared her love, time, talents, friendship, and many welcoming smiles.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, March 9, 2018, at 3:00pm at Decatur First United Methodist Church, 300 E. Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur, Georgia 30030 to celebrate her life. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to The United Methodist Children’s Home, 1967 Lakeside Parkway, Building 400, Tucker, Georgia 30084.
