Obituary for Roy Brannen Cooper

Roy Brannen Cooper passed away June 11, 2018. He grew up in Birmingham and attended Woodlawn High School. He graduated mid-year in 1944 and subsequently worked for the Central of Georgia Railroad in Columbus and Atlanta. He was drafted into the Army in 1945 and after the war ended served in Italy until 1947 when he returned and entered Georgia Tech.
In 1950 his reserve unit was called to active duty and he served in Korea from December 1950 until mid-year 1952. He reentered Georgia Tech and completed his degree in Industrial Engineering in 1953. He was a member of ATO social fraternity and Alpha Pi Mu industrial engineering honor fraternity. He was a six time letterman in track and cross country. He received his Masters in Management in 1956. After graduation he went to work for the Engineering Experiment Station at Tech where he worked for ten years. After a three year stint at the Dekalb Chamber of Commerce he went to the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce where he retired as Vice President of Economic Development after thirty one years. In 1953 after his graduation and getting a job he married the former Virginia Hudgens whom he had met on a blind date New Years Eve 1950. They corresponded while he was in Korea and dated during his last year at Tech. Virginia predeceased him after fifty two years of marriage. He is survived by three children; daughter Patricia Apfelbaum, and two sons David and Alan Cooper, their families; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, as well as his brother, Ed Cooper and his family, he is also survived by his long time friend Virginia Cathcart. He was a devoted long time member of Peace Lutheran Church at 1679 Columbia Dr. Decatur Ga. 30032 where the family asks donations be made in leiu of flowers, or to your favorite charity. Services will be held at A.S. Turner, Sunday June 17, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the chapel. The family will receive guests Saturday June 16, 2018 between the hours of 5:00 PM TO 7:00 PM at A.S. Turner & Sons.
