Walter Benjamin Kantor

WALTER BENJAMIN KANTOR, age 96 of Decatur died Friday November 3, 2017. Mr. Kantor was born July 4, 1921 in Atlanta, GA growing up in the Virginia Highlands area as one of seven children. He attended Boys High and Bass High.

He served in the U.S. Navy as the number 1 turret gun operator on the USS Martin DE 30 in the Philippines and was also the store keeper on the ship. He was in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and also in the Great Typhoon of 1944.

Mr. Kantor was a longtime resident of Decatur. He was a member of North Decatur United Methodist Church for 55 years where he ushered for many years. He worked for Sears Roebuck and Co. for 43 years and during that time was drafted into WWII and when discharged went back to work for Sears. Walter was a loving husband and father. Mr. Kantor is survived by his son, Mike Kantor and wife, Terry of Buford, GA.

Funeral Services will be held in the chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons Sunday, November 5th at 3:00 P.M. Visitation will be at 2:00 P.M. The Rev. Patrick Faulhaber of North Decatur United Methodist Church officiating. A Military Honor Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. A. S. Turner & Sons.
