Roxie Elizabeth Smith

December 24, 1928 — January 20, 2018

Roxie Elizabeth Smith, age 89, passed away peacefully
at her home in Atlanta on Saturday, January 20, 2018.
A native of the Thorn Grove community, Strawberry
Plains Tennessee, she was born December 24, 1928
to John Powell Smith Sr. and Elizabeth (Lucy) Stooksbury
Smith. In addition to her parents, Roxie was preceded in
death by her sister Faye Smith Frank, brothers John Powell
Smith and Wayne Barton Smith, and her son Creighton Lee
Smith. Roxie is survived by her husband of seventy years,
Marion Lee Smith, sons Gary Edwin Smith (Cindy) of Norcross
Georgia, and Alan Richard Smith (Tina) of Canton Georgia,
daughter Alice Ann Smith of Atlanta Georgia, grandchildren
Patrick Clayton Smith, Kelley Elizabeth Smith, Lillian Francis
Smith, Creighton Lee Smith II, Chelsea Brooke Smith, and
Corey Chase Smith. Roxie attended Carter High School in
Strawberry Plains where she was active in several clubs and
excelled on the women’s basketball team. After graduating she
attended Tennessee Wesleyan University in Athens Tennessee
where she continued playing basketball, graduating in 1945 with
an Associate’s degree in Home Economics. She then earned
a Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of
Tennessee in Knoxville, graduating in 1948. Roxie married
Marion Lee Smith in Athens September 19,1948. She was a
cherished member of the community and of Trinity United
Methodist Church in Athens for seventeen years as she raised
her family and taught school at Ingleside and City Park
Elementary schools. Roxie relocated to Atlanta with her
family in 1965. In 1974 she enrolled at Mercer University
where she obtained a Master’s degree in Education. She
continued her teaching career at Oak Grove and Rockbridge
Elementary schools until her retirement in 1991 and was an active
and valued member of Oak Grove United Methodist church for
over fifty years. She was, throughout her life, a dedicated teacher,
a devoted and beloved wife and mother, and a cherished friend to
all who knew her.
The family will receive friends Sunday January 28th 2:00-3:00 p.m.
at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Rd.,
Decatur, Georgia. Funeral ceremonies to follow at 3:00 p.m.
Interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family would prefer donations be made in
honor of Roxie to the Alzheimer's Association.
