Alexander (AL) D. King, 92, of Decatur passed away Friday, February 6, 2009. He served with the Corps of Engineers during World War II and was stationed in a map making unit in New Guinea in the South Pacific. His unit was responsible for mapping the various islands for the Marine Landings. After the war he returned to his beloved Georgia and began his career in Landscape Architecture. Throughout his career, he was always interested in service to his community. He was a member of the Decatur Masonic Lodge and a 50 plus years member of the Decatur Civitan Club. He served in various leadership positions including president of both the Decatur and later the Druid Hills Civitan Clubs. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur and an active member of the Keystone Class. His career in Landscape Architecture spanned 60 plus years. He legitimized the profession of Landscape Architecture, when as president of the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, authored a bill to set requirements to practice as a licensed Landscape Architect in the state of Georgia. He held license number three (3). Mr. King’s life was marked by his desire to serve his family, his church, his friends and colleagues, his community and most of all his country. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Lee King. Mr. King is survived by his daughter, Mary Carolyn Davis of Gainesville, GA; son, Robert I. King of Johns Creek, GA; sister, Mary Critchell of Port Washington, NY; grandchildren, Meridith L. Fleming, John J. King, Robert S. King, Erin D. London, Howard L. Davis, II, Johanna C. Davis, Alicia Hope Davis; great grandchildren, Lewis M. Fleming, Jackson D. King, William D. King, Benjamin B. London, and beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 10th at 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Decatur First United Methodist Church. Interment Decatur Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. Monday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
