Alice S. Bailey

May 1, 1951 — May 18, 2015

Alice Shelton Bailey, of Decatur, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2015. Alice was born in Denton, Texas and moved to Atlanta in her teens. She attended Briarcliff High School and earned degrees at UGA and the Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University. Alice embraced each role in her life with enthusiasm and fervor. As a devoted and loving mother to Ben and William, she gave encouragement and support to them in all their endeavors, always bestowing her unconditional love. When she became a grandmother, she continued to delight, entertain and love her grandchildren with equal passion. She was the Mary Poppins of the classroom at Oak Grove Elementary School, where she made learning a magical adventure. She had a song for every lesson and, through her creativity, brought history and literature to life for her lucky students. An incomparable friend, she was thoughtful and kind with a listening ear and a wisdom freely shared. She had an infectious laugh and a love for life and all its possibilities. Devotion and support were two hallmarks of Alice's life and they were very evident in her relationship with her mother, Bennie Lou Shelton, whom she admired and loved with all her heart and with her husband. Finding the love of her life in Louis Bailey, Alice's devotion knew no bounds and their relationship was loving, close, joyful and fun. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Louis F. Bailey, Jr.; mother, Bennie Lou Shelton; son, Benjamin Harris and wife Megan; sister, Jane Vale; and grandchildren, Addie, Jackson, Bailey, and Reagan. She was predeceased by her son, William. A memorial service will take place Friday, May 22nd at 11:00 AM at Oak Grove United Methodist Church (1722 Oak Grove Rd., Decatur, GA 30033).
