Anibal Adan

October 2, 1924 — April 27, 2016

Anibal Adan, MD, 91, passed away on April 26, 2016. Anibal, also known as Andy to his friends,
was born October 2, 1924 in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, the son of Ignacio Adan Sueiras and Angela
Marquez Paez. After graduating from Escuela Normal de Pinar del Rio (Normal School For
Teachers) in June 1943, Anibal taught school for one year in Cuba. He also earned a Bachelor
of Science degree in August 1944 from the Instituto de Segunda Ensenanza de Pinar Del Rio,
and a medical degree from the University of Havana in August 1951. Dr. Anibal Adan worked for
one year in Cuba after graduating from medical school. In 1952, he saw military tanks moving in
Havana, when the dictator Fulgencio Batista staged a military coup, and decided at that time to
come to the United States. He came with one suitcase of clothes, one suitcase of books, and
eleven dollars in his pocket. After arriving, he worked as a house physician in Tampa, Florida for
one year. He then did an internship at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Virginia from
July 1953 through June 1954. It was there he met his future wife, Virginia DeLois Jenkins, RN,
who was a nurse working there, and they were married on September 17, 1960 at the Saint
Terese Church of the Little Flower, in Gloucester, Virginia. He became a naturalized citizen of
the United States in 1960, and has lived in Atlanta, Georgia since then. Anibal also did training
at Duke University School of Medicine, and a fellowship in anesthesiology at The Presbyterian
Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1961, Dr. Anibal Adan joined Dr. George Sessions as a
charter member of DeKalb Anesthesia Associates, PA, and was the anesthesiologist for the first
surgery at Dekalb General Hospital on May 2, 1961; he practiced there for 25 years. Anibal was a wonderful family man, friend, and neighbor. In the 1960s, he helped many of his Cuban family who came to the United States as exiles. He was a kind and compassionate man who loved his family and friends, was a voracious reader, excelled in discussing stories about his youth, family, and history, and was an outstanding cook. Anibal was a man with faith in God. Those who knew and loved him will deeply miss him and will cherish his memory. Anibal was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Virginia DeLois Jenkins Adan, his parents, brothers, Juan Ignacio, Luis, Francisco (Pancho), Oscar, and Jesus, and his sisters, Zoila Fe, Maria, Eva, Dora, Noema, and Angela Ofelia (twin sister). He is survived by his daughter Angela Maria Adan Farnham and her husband Davis Boyt Farnham of Oak Park, Illinois, sons Victor Adan and his wife Denise Evelyn Adan of Buena Vista, Colorado, and Anibal Michael Adan and his wife Natalie Marie Adan of Stone Mountain, Georgia, grandchildren Olivia Maria Farnham, Grace Adan Farnham, Lilly Maria Adan, Ava Violet Adan, Elias Noah Adan, and Eliana Esther
