Anne d' Eresby Irby Comer, age 90, died Monday, September 28, 2009. She was the daughter of John Edward Irby and Florence Sharp Irby. Mrs. Comer was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in Decatur, Georgia. In later life she lived in Stone Mountain, Georgia and Leesburg, Florida. She was the great granddaughter of Henry Irby, who came from South Carolina and bought two hundred and one half acres at the intersection of West Paces Ferry and Peachtree Roads for six hundred and fifty dollars in 1838. He settled the community called Irbyville. Later the name was changed to Buckhead when Mr. Irby shot a deer and mounted the head on a pole at his tavern. Mrs. Comer graduated from Decatur Girl's High, and attended Oglethorpe University and the University of Chattanooga, Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was a member of the Kappa Delta National Sorority and Omicron Delta. She was a life long member of the Presbyterian Church and at the time of her death, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Leesburg, Florida. She was an Amateur Radio Operator (“Ham”). For many years she was an active member of the Georgia World Organization of China Painters and, also, the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James Mark Comer, Jr. and brother, John Edward Irby, Jr. She is survived by her sons, James Mark Comer, III and wife, Sharon DeVore Comer, and Edward Irby Comer and wife, Gail Chandler Comer. She is survived by three grandchildren, Christopher Mark Comer, Laura Comer Vitale and Edward Alexander Comer. She also leaves eight great-grandchildren, Carley Elizabeth Comer, Nicholas Mark Comer, Jacob Michael Comer, Juliet Forrest Comer, Serena Anne Comer, Giana Isabella Vitale, Christina Maria Vitale and Landry Matthew Vitale. Nieces, Catherine Elise Irby, Marion Fletcher Bell and Holly Marie Fletcher and nephew, Jayson Ian Irby. She is also survived by brothers in law, Curtis Eugene Comer and John Raymond Comer. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Powder Springs Cemetery, Powder Springs, GA with The Reverend Canon Alicia Schuster Weltner officiating. A. S.
