Annie Estelle Larmore

Annie Mays Larmore passed away on August 2013 at the rich age of 106. With all of her many accomplishments, nothing became her so well as the grace and love with which she embraced her years as a centenarian. She taught lessons to all who met her in these six and one half years. If the good Lord decided to keep me here this long, He must have done so for a reason, she said. And so, she tried to give something of herself and her wisdom to each person she encountered. Grow old, don't just get old, was her motto. Annie was born February 28, 1907 in Forsyth, Georgia to John Crowder and Susie Shannon Mays. She was blessed to grow up in a fine Christian family in Macon, Ga. on the site of what is now part of Mercer University. She earned a BA degree from Wesleyan College in 1928, a Masters degree in English from Mercer College, and a Library Science degree from Emory University. After receiving her Library degree, she served as librarian at Norman Junior College. She then became Assistant Librarian and the Head Librarian at Mercer University. In 1941, she married Jesse Carrell Larry Larmore, after a 10-year engagement, and moved to Atlanta. There she went to work for the Atlanta Public Library as a branch librarian in the Stewart Avenue and Oakland City neighborhoods. She served as a branch librarian until she retired in 1973. After retiring, she and her husband moved to Decatur to be near family, and became active in their community civic and garden clubs, church activities at Sylvan Hills Baptist and Park Street Methodist Churches, and stamp and coin clubs. Annie became very active in alumnae associations at Wesleyan College and Mercer University. At the center of her life was a deep faith in God, and a sincere love and concern for the welfare of others. 'I want to be around as long as I can be useful' she always said, and so she was. Annie is survived by her only child, a daughter, Carrell A. Dammann; her grandchildren, Tamberly and Sean Dammann, Shannon and Stuart Downs of Decatur, GA; and her four lovely great-grandchildren, Carter, Carlin, twins Jovan and Elijah. In lieu of flowers, she requests donations be sent to Wesleyan College, Office of Institutional Advancement, 4760 Forsyth Road, Macon, GA 31210. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Sunday, August 18, 2013 in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons. Interment will follow at Cabiness Cemetery on Stokes Store Road in Forsyth, GA at 1:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 PM Saturday at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
