Bessie Helen Turner

Helen Ross Turner, 94, of Decatur, passed away December 24th, 2012 at Dekalb Medical Hospital. Helen was born, 'baby girl Ross' near the end of World War I on June 1st, 1918 in Monroe, LA. Her father, the late Francis Alexander, was in France at the time of her birth, and it was not until his return that she was formally given her name, Bessie Helen Ross. Helen's parents were Francis Alexander and Eva Jones Ross of Decatur, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Michael Turner, and her daughter, Paula Suzanne Turner Vaughn of Conyers, GA. Helen was a long-time member of Avondale Pattillo United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and served on nearly every church committee including several terms on the Board of Trustees. She had number of jobs during her lifetime including two years at Rich's where she worked as secretary to the buyer; twelve years at Agnes Scott College, where she served as secretary to the President and then Assistant to the Business Manager; and twenty years at Thibadeau Realty Company as a selling agent and associate broker. Helen was a lifetime member of the DeKalb Board of Realtors Million Dollar Club. Helen loved people and enjoyed playing bridge and scrabble. She lived a very full life at Clairmont Place where she made many, many friends and was involved in several bridge groups that sought her out for her skill of the game. She was blessed to have spent the last years of her life in such a wonderful place. She is survived by her daughter, Helen Maureen Vandiver and husband, Dr. Roy W. Vandiver of Decatur; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. The grandchildren are; Michael Vandiver and wife Denise, Ross Vandiver and wife Evelyn, Scott Vandiver and wife Stacey, Al Vaughn and wife Robyn Ellis Vaughn, Julia Maureen Vaughn, Rebekah Vaughn Tiller and husband Barnum Tiller. Her great grandchildren include; Kylie and Cole Vandiver, Nathan, Ben, AnaLee and Helen Colette Vandiver, Kaegan Stone, Jake and Rayce Vaughn, and Paula Rose and Carter Tiller. Memorial gifts may be made in Helen's name to the Avondale Pattillo United Methodist Church located at 3260 Covington Hwy., Decatur, GA 30032. where her memorial services will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, January 4th, 2013.
