Betty Lou Carroll

August 4, 1930 — October 5, 2013

Betty Lou Carroll, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away surrounded by her loving family on October 5, 2013. Betty Lou was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1930. Her parents moved to Atlanta, GA when she was an infant to work at the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill in Cabbagetown. She loved growing up in the city of Atlanta where she attended Inman Park Elementary School, Hoke Smith Junior High School and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1948. She had many jobs in Atlanta including WT Grant's 5 and 10 cent store, Newberrys 5 and 10, Simmons Mattress Company, Georgia Power Company, and for the State of Georgia, Department of Vocational Rehabilitation as a Senior Secretary. She won several secretarial awards before she retired in 1996. During her retirement she traveled to New York, made several trips to California to visit family as well as several regional trips throughout the Southeast. During her life she was a member of Hapeville First Baptist and Clarkston Baptist Church and also Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church with her family. She married John Tyler Carroll, Jr. in 1964 at Second Baptist church on Peachtree Road in Buckhead. John a Tucker, Georgia native, received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a sales representative for Shell Oil Company. They were married for 36 years. He passed away in May 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Tyler Carroll, Jr., brothers; Cecil, Doug, and Kenneth Hamrick, niece Jeannie Allen; step-grandson Robert Lentini. She is survived by son, Jeffrey Carroll (Vicki); daughter, Julie Carroll (William); granddaughter, Charlotte Dawson; step-granddaughter, Taylor Resley; step-grandson, Kenneth Lentini and family; sister, Louise Stother and family, sister, Shirley H. Smith and niece, Lori Moore and family. A graveside service will be held Tuesday October, 8, 2013 at 11:00 am at Crest Lawn Memorial Park with Rev. Donny Hamrick officiating. The family will receive friends Monday October 7, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at A.S. Turner and Sons. A memorial Service honoring Mrs. Carroll will be held November 2, 2013 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church of Decatur. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Fountainview for the care and compassion provided to Mrs. Carroll for several years.
