Burns W. Ivey

Mr. Burns W. Ivey passed away on February 13, 2008, at Saint Joseph's Hospital, at the age of 90.  He was born January 12, 1918 in Gwinnett County, Luxomni, Georgia and was a member of Luxomni Baptist Church.  Mr. Ivey served in World War II in the United States Air Force from 1942 to 1946.  He was a Lt. Colonel in Squad I, Georgia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol from January 1, 1948 to June 30, 1990.  He graduated from the Air Force Extension Course Institute, Maxwell Field, Alabama, after World War II and was licensed a Commercial pilot on January 15, 1946, and has over 1500 hours of flying time. Mr. Ivey has been associated with the Hill Aircraft Corporation since his discharge from the Air Force in 1946 until the present time. Upon returning from military service in 1946, he became a business partner with three friends in the food distribution business for over 32 years.  He retired from this business in 1978.  Mr. Ivey joined the Pythagoras Lodge #41, Decatur, Georgia in 1948 and third Masonic Lodge in the State of Georgia.  He then joined the Scottish Rite Valley of Atlanta, 32nd Degree.  In December 1953 he joined the Yaarab Shrine Temple and was a charter member in organizing the Flying Fezzes Association in 1974.  He is also a member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia (POAG).  Mr. Ivey is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Margaret Ellen Montgomery Ivey, who died in June 1994; by his parents, William P. Ivey and Mattie F. Ivey; three brothers, Herbert H. Ivey, William P. Ivey, Jr. and Samuel N. Ivey; and one sister, Ora M. Williams.  He is survived by one brother, Sidney H. Ivey and his wife Frances; and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held at 12:30 P.M. Saturday, February, 16th in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons.  Interment will be at Arlington Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Yaarab Shrine Temple, 400 Ponce de Leon Ave., N.E., Atlanta, GA  30308.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
