Caro M. Pendergraft

Caro Miller Pendergraft, age 96, of Atlanta, Georgia, died Thursday, November 6, 2008.  Mr. Pendergraft was born on August 27, 1912 in Joplin, Missouri to the late Garner Pendergraft and Verna Miller. In the 1930’s, he worked for Montgomery Ward where he started a dance band using the name Jay Franklyn.  Mr. Pendergraft served in the Marines during World War II and fought in the Battle of Midway. He was also a member of the Marine Band and played the Bass drum. After World War II, Mr. Pendergraft moved to Lake Tahoe and Carson City and had a clothing store in both places. He was the Mayor of Carson City from 1949 to 1951. After his term as Mayor he moved to Birmingham, Alabama where he worked for Hanna Steel Corporation under General Walter Hanna. At the time of his retirement, he was Vice President of Sales. After retiring, he traveled all over the world on golfing trips. Mr. Pendergraft was a Shriner for over fifty years and belonged to Masonic Lodge 444 in Chamblee, Georgia.  He was also a Life senior member of Druid Hills Golf Club; where he enjoyed his favorite pastime of golf. Mr. Pendergraft was preceded in death by his wife Agnes.  He is survived by his son, Ronald P. Pendergraft, daughter-in-law Patricia, and step-daughters, Janice Long and Sally Predika. “Mr. P.” will be missed personally by all who knew and loved him.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation at Scottish Rite, 1687 Tullie Circle, N.E., Atlanta, GA  30329 (404) 785-GIVE.  Graveside services will be held at Floral Hills Memory Gardens on Monday, November 17th at 11:00 am.  A.
