Carolyn Carson Schaible

July 9, 1909 — August 3, 2010

Carolyn Carson Schaible, 101, died at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday (August 3, 2010).  Cremation rites were accorded. Her memorial service will be held at a later date.  Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of the donor’s choice. Carolyn was born July 7, 1909 in Ridge Springs, S.C.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald L. Moore and Maynard V. Schaible, and her daughter Donalyn Elich.  She is survived by children Douglas C. Moore, Jefferson, GA; Benjamin Moore, Bloomington, IL; Laura M. Hauser, Decatur, GA; D. Kent Moore, Decatur, GA; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  She graduated from Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. in 1929.  She taught public schools in Union and Lamar, S.C. and at Decatur and Druid Hills High Schools in Decatur, GA.  She also served as Chief Probation Officer for the Dekalb County Juvenile Court.  Later, she served as Director of Women’s Housing and Assistant Dean of Women at Emory University.  Upon her retirement from Emory at an age of 65, she served as a manager in the Office of Aging for Georgia an additional 17 years, where among other accomplishments was her founding Georgia’s Retired Senior Volunteer program. A long term volunteer in many organizations, she served as the first president pro-tem of the Georgia Silver-Haired Legislature and sponsored its Long-Term Care Ombudsman Act, and later the Ombudsman was established by the Georgia General Assembly.  She also was very active for many years in Decatur First United Methodist and Grace United Methodist Churches. Carolyn’s life benefited many people, and her impact will be long remembered.
