Carolyn Lynch Burnette

November 10, 1937 — June 14, 2012

Carolyn Lynch Burnette, age 74, of Stone Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 14, 2012. She will be long remembered for her beautiful Christian life, for her love and compassion for her beloved husband and precious family, and the many friends whose lives she touched. Carolyn was born in Atlanta on November 10, 1937. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Roland Lynch and Belle Smith Lynch. Carolyn is survived by her husband, Earl W. Burnette, and his children, Terri Burnette, Barry Burnette, Greg (Jennifer), Patrick, and grandson, Chandler Burnette. She is also survived by her cousins, Lewis (Betty) Saxon of Stone Mountain and Richard (Sherril) Saxon of Griffin. Carolyn graduated from Murphy High School in Atlanta and graduated from the University of Georgia, where she earned her undergraduate and Master's degrees in Education. She taught in Texas, Canby Lane Elementary and Leslie J. Steele Elementary schools in DeKalb County. Later, she was a Supervisor in Mathematics and retired from the position of Area Director in the DeKalb County School System. She was a devoted member of Alpha Delta Kappa for over 25 years, serving as chapter president, Decatur District Chairman, Georgia State President, International Vice President of the Gulf Region and on the International Executive Board for four years. Carolyn was also active in the Decatur Woman's Club serving as a Department Chair and was the Treasurer for the Decatur-DeKalb Retired Teachers Association for many years. Carolyn was a member of Belvedere United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible Studies. She was the Lay Delegate for her church to the North Georgia Conference. Carolyn was an avid reader of literature. She enjoyed traveling. In fact, one of her goals was to travel to all 50 states and journeyed to all except Wisconsin. The funeral service will be held 2 pm, Monday, June 18, 2012, in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons, Decatur, with Rev. Jesse Walter and Rev. James Sanders officiating. Interment, Resthaven Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked contributions be sent to the Carolyn Burnette Scholarship. To make a contribution in her memory, checks should be made payable to the Iota Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa and mailed to Rose Vance, 3641 Sheffield Pl. Tucker GA 30084 or make contributions to the Alpha Delta Kappa Foundation, Memorial Fund with checks mailed to Alpha Delta Kappa Foundation, 1615 West 92nd Street, Kansas City, MO 64114. Contributions may also be made to your favorite charity in Carolyn's memory. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7 pm Sunday and from 12:30 pm-1:30 pm Monday prior to the service at A .S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
