Charles Allen Moye, Jr.

Charles Allen Moye, Jr., Senior United States District Court Judge, Northern District of Georgia, died in Atlanta on July 26,2010, at the age of92. He was the only child of Charles Allen Moye, Sr., of Cuthbert, Georgia, and Annie Luther Williamson Moye of Barnesville, Georgia. Born in the home of his grandfather, William James Williamson, on Highland Avenue, he attended Bass Junior High School and graduated from Boys High School in the Class of 1935. Judge Moye received his B.A. from Emory University, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, and graduated from Emory University Law School in 1943. He married Sarah Ellen Johnston of Newnan, Georgia, two years later, and she survives. The couple resided in New York and then in Atlanta, where Judge Moye was a member of the firm of Gambrell and White, and its successors. Active in politics, he ran for the Georgia State Senate and the United State House of Representatives in 1952 and 1954 respectively. It was reported that he was the first Republican to run for office in Georgia since Reconstruction. In 1970, he was appointed to the federal court by President Richard Nixon, and served for a time as Chief Judge. He was a founding member of Clairmont Hills Baptist Church and later joined Central Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club for over fifty years. In addition to his wife, Judge Moye leaves a daughter, Lucy Ellen Moye, of Hillsdale, Michigan; a son and daughter-in-law, H. Allen Moye and Elizabeth Reynolds Moye, of Decatur; a granddaughter, Emily Moye Skuban, of Atlanta; and a great-grandson, William Henry Skuban, of Atlanta. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Henry and Dorothy Johnston, of Kinston, North Carolina, and their children, Sondra Johnston Autry (Don) and Beverly Johnston Wiley (Allen). The family will have a private service of commitment at the Decatur Cemetery. A public memorial service will be held at Central Congregational United Church of Christ, 2767 Clairmont Road., NE, Atlanta, on Friday, July 30, at 2 p.m.; reception immediately following. During his life, Judge Moye loyally supported Emory University; the Atlanta Audubon Society, 4055 Roswell Road, Atlanta, Georgia, 30342; and, the Atlanta Humane Society, 981 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30318. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to one of these organizations, or to the charity of choice.
