Charles Floyd Scott, 87, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2021.

Charles was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1934, the sixth child of David G. and Mildred Hollingsworth Scott. They soon moved to Decatur where Charles was “ensconced” as a “Decaturite” forever.

He attended Winnona Park Elementary, Decatur Boys High, was a lifelong member of Decatur Presbyterian Church, and met his wife JoAnn Dodson while they were in high school. Charles entered Oglethorpe University as a pre-med student, but would graduate with a degree in Philosophy and a passion for Horticulture.

That passion lead him to start Scott’s Landscape and Grading Co. which operated for nearly 30 years. They landed many large contracts including the renovation of the Braves baseball field in 1967, the landscaping of the DeKalb County Courthouse, work at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, and the enormous Western Electric complex in Gwinnett Co. The trees along Peachtree Street in Atlanta were also planted by Scott’s Landscape Co.

Following his 30 year career running Scott’s Landscape, Charles went to work for Emory University as Facilities Manager where he went about “beautifying” the campus, and was instrumental in the start up of the FMD-Emory Recycling program for which he was presented an Award of Distinction. He also oversaw building construction and renovation at Oxford College and received praise from President Bill Clinton during the 1995 graduation ceremonies. He retired from Emory in 1998 but not from the “beautification” business. He continued doing what he loved well into his 80’s. He was creative and had a unique eye for esthetics.

He had a giant heart and was generous to a fault. He played the guitar by ear and was always harmonizing with his brothers. He loved a good bluegrass band and beautiful bed of color flowers! He mostly loved his wife and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, JoAnn, sister, Dorothy Stevenson and brothers, Jack and David Scott.

Surviving are children, Leigh Ann Scott (Steve)of Decatur GA, Melanie Young of Park City, Utah and Lauralee Burke (Jay) of Lawrenceville GA.

Grandchildren, Andrew Werling, Annabelle Weyland (Tim), Will Burke (Kristyn) and Madalyn Burke. One great-grandchild. Sisters, Mildred Haynes of Starke FLA and Betty Nell Keane, of Sandy Springs GA. A host of nieces, nephews and dear friends survive him.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 27th at A.S. Turners in Decatur at 1:30 with a graveside service at Decatur Cemetery following at 3:00.
