Charles G. Shockley of Decatur, GA passed away on April 11, 2014 at the age of 91. He was born on April 5, 2023 in Apalachee, GA. He grew up in Monroe, GA where he formed many happy memories with his cousins and friends. His parents were Archie Govan Shockley and Mattie Blatz Donnahoo. He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes Williams Shockley, his parents, his sister Ernestine Shockley Cole and his brother Richard Shockley. After graduation from Monroe High School in 1940. He entered the Merchant Marines in 1941 and then the U.S, Navy, where he became a Navy Pilot. He attended flight and training camps all over the Southeast, including North Georgia College and the University of Georgia. At the conclusion of World War II, he returned to Georgia and began selling insurance all over the Southeast. On April 3, 1953 he married Agnes Williams. In 1954, he opened his the Charles Shockley Insurance Agency and later formed the Stevenson, Shockley, Stevenson Independent Insurance Agency with George and Scott Stevenson, where he worked until he retired in 1991. Charles was a proud member of the LaVista Lions Club. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions International Foundation for his decades of service to the Lions. He was also an early member of the Clairmont Hills Baptist Church in Decatur. He was a devoted member and loved serving Christ through his church. Among his many roles at Clairmont Hills Baptist, he was Chair of the Deacons and Chair of the Finance Committee. He was a member of the Masons, the Silver Wings organization for pilots, the Association of Naval Aviation, a charter member of the United States Navy Memorial and a board member of the Mountain Park Nursing Home. He received honors from both Silver Wings and the Mason for over 50 years of membership. He is survived by his children, Chas G. Shockley, Jr. (Ann) and Sandrea Gamsby (John); three grandchildren, Frank and Hannah Gamsby and Emma Shockley; his sister, Nedra Mae Shockley; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews. Charles cherished his friends in the Amanda Circle area, where he lived for over 60 years, and was beloved everyone who knew him. Funeral services will be held at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 22nd with Rev. Fred Pitts and Rev. Larry Burgess officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Apalachee United Methodist Church, 5070 Lower Apalachee Road, Madison, GA 30650. The family will receive friends Moday evening from 6-8 PM at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
