Charles Stuart Bell

Charles Stuart "Chuck" Bell, Sr., 80, of Tucker, passed away Tuesday August 13, 2013 after a 6-year battle with cancer. Born in Huntington, WV, in 1933, he graduated from Huntington High School, attended Greenbrier Military Academy prep school in Lewisburg, WV, then Ohio University in Athens, OH, on football and swimming scholarships. He was an outstanding member of the OU 1953 Mid-America Conference championship football team, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Student Council and president of the Varsity O Club. From 1955-1965 he served in the U. S. Army at Ft. Lee, VA; Kaiserslautern, Germany; Ft. Benning, GA; Seoul, South Korea; and Natick, MA Research and Development Center. He was a Unit Commander, Ranger, Paratrooper, Pathfinder and with Special Forces, rising to the rank of Captain. During that time he also raced sports cars in Europe, attained a 2nd degree black belt in Tang Soo Do Martial Arts in Korea and coached Army football teams at Ft. Benning, and Seoul, Korea. Returning to civilian life, Mr. Bell was a District Sales Manager for Merriman, Inc., a division of Litton Industries, before founding Chuck Bell Sports Sales, an independent sales agency in the tennis and ski industries. A long-time Atlanta resident, Mr. Bell held leadership positions in the Atlanta Ski Club, Southeastern Ski Reps Assoc., Georgia Chapter of Ohio University Alumni Assoc., and Georgetown and Winding Vista Recreation Clubs. He was an active member of the Emory Healthcare Patient/Family Advisory Council, Concourse Athletic Club, Atlanta Lawn Tennis Assoc., Embry Hills United Methodist Church and Chuck Harding Sunday School Class. In recent years, despite his health challenges, he and his wife, Sylvia, traveled extensively. Chuck advocated, "Live life to its fullest: enjoy every day, every situation, be the best person you can be, see and do things." In addition to Sylvia, he is survived by sons Charles Bell, Jr. (Marvel) of Decatur, Robert Bell of Cumming, and David Scott Bell (Jennifer) of Dunwoody, grandsons Cooper, Jackson and Yeats Bell; step-sons Karl (Amy) Bostwick of Ft. Myers, FL, Charlie (Marsi) Bostwick of Sandy Springs; step-daughter Kris (Bif) Washburn of Tucker; seven step-grandchildren; and cousins Louise (Rich) Galvin of Cocoa Beach, FL, William Langfitt II of Salton Sea, CA, and Michael Langfitt, Wichita, KS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Embry Hills United Methodist Church or Emory University Winship Cancer Institute
