Clarke Howard Witter

January 2, 1963 — December 2, 2019

Clarke Howard Witter, 56, died peacefully on Monday, December 3, at Emory Hospital in Atlanta after a year-long battle with advanced laryngeal cancer.

Clarke was born Jan. 2, 1963, in Murphy, N.C., to Hamilton and Joy Lee Witter. He is a graduate of Pisgah High School in Canton, N.C., and he retained a life-long love of the Western North Carolina mountains.

Clarke has also lived in Atlanta and lived in Winder, Georgia for the past 20 years. A licensed electrician, he owned his own business, Qualified Electric for many years. He is survived by his son, Wesley Witter, 20, of Winder; by his former wife, Robin Witter, of Winder; and by his sister, Dianne Witter, of San Marcos, TX. Of everything in his life, Clarke was most proud of his son Wesley, who is pursuing a degree in information technology at University of Georgia.

An avid and accomplished bass fisherman, Clarke's favorite activity was dropping a line at Lake Lanier. He placed in many fishing tournaments, most notably the Hammond Series.

Those who knew Clarke will remember his bright mind, quick wit, and quicker temper. He was known for his witty observations and his sense of humor. While in recent years, he had difficult struggles with health problems and addiction, his faith remained an important touchstone in his life. Raised in the Episcopal Church, in recent years he was a member of the non-denominational Church at Winder.

Final arrangements are being handled by A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA. A memorial service will be held in early 2020; details will be announced after the first of the year. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a memorial account created to assist the family in costs for cremation and finalizing Clarke's affairs.
