Conrad Lacunious Allgood, Jr.

Conrad L. Allgood, Jr. passed away July 25, 2007.  Born in Scottdale, Georgia, on May 24, 1920, to Dr. Conrad Allgood Sr. and Lucy Faulkner Allgood He is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Mary Frances Simpson Allgood. He graduated from Avondale High School. During World War II, he served in the US Army in Brazil, then earned his undergraduate degrees in biology & chemistry and graduate degrees in educational leadership from the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the Gridiron Club. He taught Chemistry at Tucker High School and then worked as a principal in Henry County   before continuing his career with DeKalb County Public Schools. He was the first principal of Tucker Elementary School where he served for 26 years. His elementary school students often fondly tell colorful stories about Mr. Allgood?s love of teaching science and his interest in animals, especially amphibians and reptiles. He was described as a hands-on science teacher before his time and inspired his students to achieve success, with many of them moving forward in educational careers. He served as a founding member of the Board of Directors of Tucker Federal Bank and was active in many civic organizations, including the Tucker Kiwanis Club and Masons. He contributed to the development of Allgood Elementary School, was instrumental in starting the Tucker Health Clinic, and was involved in the start up of the DeKalb Teachers Credit Union. His love of and involvement with  Dekalb County and the Tucker Community, especially during the 1950's through 1970's, affected the lives of many generations of  families, whose names he could recall for the duration of his life. He retired from the DeKalb County School System in 1980 after which he and Mary spent many years traveling and enjoying family.



The greatest joy of Conrad's life was his family.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years,  Mary, by daughters Deborah Allgood of Snellville, Marilyn Allgood of Stone Mountain, son and daughter-in-law Cla and Janet Allgood of Cumming, and daughter and son-in-law Diane and Vandy Davis of Thomasville; grandchildren Will and Lauren Riley, Derek and Kurt Hughes, Hailey Allgood, and Erin and Andrea Davis; sisters Lucy Allgood Flowers, Virginia Allgood Clarke, Dr. Allene Allgood Denton, and Marjorie Allgood Campbell; sisters-in-law Alice Muschler Allgood, Margaret Simpson Mann, and Alma Simpson Akin, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his sisters Mary Ruth Allgood Roberts and Zoa Allgood Johnson and brother James Edward Allgood.



At his request, a simple graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 29, 2007, at Melwood Cemetery and Gardens at 4170 E. Ponce de Leon Ave. Stone Mountain, Georgia 30083. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association (P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA  22312  www.diabetes.org) or the American Heart Association (7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231-4596  www.americanheart.org).
