Dorothy Anita Fairweather

May 21, 1950 — March 22, 2021

Dorothy Anita Fairweather was born on May 21, 1950 to Edward Henry Briscoe and Ruby Briscoe in Kingston, Jamaica. She attended Allman Town Infant School, Central Branch Primary School, and Wolmer’s High School for Girls growing up in Kingston. As a young girl, she was active in the youth programs at the Salvation Army Corps in Allman Town.

Dorothy migrated to the United States in 1971 and lived with her parents in Brooklyn, New York. The following year, she married her high school sweetheart, Gilbert Fairweather, and the couple moved to New Jersey. As the Fairweather family grew, Dorothy would often take leave from work as an executive assistant to spend time in the home to coordinate music lessons, scouting trips, and team sports.

Dorothy’s graciousness towards others, her quiet strength, and her dignity were inspiring to all who knew her. When the Fairweathers relocated to Georgia in the mid-80s, it was Dorothy’s hospitality and her kind spirit that easily converted visiting guests to fellow Atlantans.

In 2009, a semi-retired Dorothy decided to pursue a career in health insurance, and so she studied for and passed the life and health insurance exam. Having spent the past 15 years helping her parents navigate insurance as part of their health care journey, she chose to specialize in Medicare to help other seniors do same. When not selling insurance, Dorothy loved traveling, reconnecting with childhood friends, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Dorothy lived her life in full expression of the Proverbs 31 woman. She was strong in her faith and she applied God’s wisdom into practice in her life. Many people benefited from her kind heart and her generosity, but the most important part of Dorothy’s life was her family. She was a virtuous caregiver for her children, her husband, and her parents – and she was excellent in that role. Dorothy continued to mother her children with grace, even in their adult years. And even in her final days, she continued to offer wise counsel. As the Fairweather children share their gifts with others by leading, singing, writing, and teaching, they are simply the fruit from the seeds that Dorothy diligently planted throughout their childhood.

Dorothy is survived by her sister Gloria; her children Nichole, Kimanne, Abijah, Daniel, and Leanne; step-daughter Julian; and eight grandchildren, with another grandchild due in May. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother George, her mother-in-law Beryl, and her beloved husband Gilbert.
