Dr. Gerhard O. Bern

Dr. Gerhard Orville Bern, 89, of Atlanta died Saturday, March 5, 2005 of natural causes at DeKalb Medical Center. A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he was born to Ida Stime and Ole Bern.  Dr. Bern was in the first graduating class from Utah University Medical School in 1942 and specialized in internal medicine from 1942 to 1946 in Akron, OH. Having earned the rank of Captain, he served with the Medical Corps during the Korean Conflict. From 1948 to 1952 Dr. Bern served his residency at Hospital of Portland in Oregon and was Chief of Staff of Rehabilitation at the Veterans Hospital in Atlanta from 1952 to 1982.  After his tenure with the VA Hospital, he served on staff at the Georgia Tech Infirmary from 1982 to 1992.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Clark Bern.  He is survived by his two daughters, Jacqueline Bern of Jackson, GA; and Anita Bern Amis of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren, Ronald Ewing, Donna Carroll, and Kelsey Jeon Amis; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Emma Butcher of Milwaukee, WI and Erna Crusinberry of Hasting, NE.  Memorial services will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons at 12 noon Saturday, March 12th with interment at Melwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at A. S. Turner & Sons
