Dr. John E. Mobley, 75, of Lawrenceville died July 25, 2012. Dr. Mobley graduated from Southwest DeKalb High School, Class of 1955, Young Harris College and Oglethorpe University. At Young Harris and Oglethorpe he was a member of the Varsity Basketball Teams and coached the Freshmen Team at Oglethorpe. John completed his graduate studies at the University of Georgia and his Doctorate Degree at Nova University. He was employed with the DeKalb County School System as a high school principal with Open Campus. Dr. Mobley developed and implemented an alternative program for at-risk students that was a non-traditional high school and changed the lives of thousands of students. The DeKalb Open Campus became a model for school systems across the country. Dr. Mobley was an advocate for students. Dr. Mobley retired in 1990 and enjoyed fishing, reading, cooking, gardening and his Boxer, Duke. John enjoyed sharing the vegetables from his garden with family and friends. Dr. Mobley is survived by Marci Palma; Duke, his beloved dog; siblings: Helen Waye, Dean Mobley, Ann (Weldon) Edwards, Mary Nell (Roy) Rainwater, Carolyn (Milton) Bryant; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and one son, John Mobley. Dr. Mobley was predeceased by his parents Julius and Corine Loggins Mobley and siblings: Gene Mobley, Betty Green and Billy Mobley. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 18 at 3:00 p.m. at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur. Visitation is from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Young Harris College or Oglethorpe University or the charity of one's choice.
