Dr. John "Jack" Hassinger

June 4, 1935 — February 2, 2019

Dr. John Thomas "Jack" Hassinger, 83, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019. Born June 4, 1935, in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late John and Mary Hassinger. Jack graduated McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and the University of Ottawa Medical School. After serving as a MASH surgeon in the US Army in Vietnam, Jack became a general surgeon who specialized in trauma and pioneered laparoscopic surgical techniques. He was also chief of surgery at DeKalb Medical Center in Decatur, GA. An avid sailor who loved traveling, reading, and classical music, he will be remembered for his gentle bedside manner, abiding concern for his patients, ready wit and wry sense of humor.

Jack is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gail Penman Hassinger; his children and their spouses, Mike Hassinger, Doug Hassinger, Kathleen Kellett and husband Stiles Kellett, III, and Sarah Williamson and husband Campbell Williamson; his grandchildren, Ben Hassinger, Abby Hassinger, Stiles Kellett, IV, Katie Kellett, Lucy Hassinger, and Molly Hassinger; and his siblings; Patricia Flatley, Janet Dales, and Jim Hassinger. He will be missed dearly by his loving family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or a charity of your choice.

Services will be held at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Stone Mountain, GA, on February 16, 2019 at 11am.
