Dr. Walter S. Nied, Jr.

Dr. Walter S. Nied Jr., 90, passed peacefully on Saturday, February 16, 2019. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jane C. Nied; his two children and their spouses, Anne Brewer and her husband, Roy, and John Nied and his wife, Lisa; sister, Virginia Chase and her husband, Ray; grandsons, Joe and his wife, Melissa, Jeremiah and his wife, Vicki, and Josh and his wife, Jennifer; twelve great grandchildren; and many more loving family and friends.

Walter was born in Philadelphia, PA, on February 13, 1929. He attended the college of William and Mary (1946-1949) and graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1953.

Walter was commissioned in the Dental Corp USNR in 1952, served on active duty at Parris Island, SC, and Guam M.I, and was released from active duty in 1955. He continued in the Ready Reserves at Naval Reserve Unit 6-1 at Georgia Tech until his retirement in June 1976 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Walter and Jane were married on May 20, 1954, at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta. On returning to Atlanta from San Francisco in 1955, he taught at Emory University School of Dentistry until 1959. He opened his own office in Decatur, GA in June 1959 and continued his professional career until retiring in March 1990.

Walter joined the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in the spring of 1959 where he kept his membership until his passing. He spent many years contributing his services to the DeKalb County Health Department, Atlanta Classic Foundation and the Salvation Army.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 24, at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, February 25, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Atlanta, GA. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA.
