Edward Reid Flynt

Mr. Edward Reid Flynt, 97, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of DeKalb County, Georgia, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012. He was born to Nannie Hall Flynt and the Rev. William Albert Harvey Flynt on April 19, 1915 in Powelton, GA. He graduated from high school in Sparta, GA, and then entered Georgia Tech as a co-op student. After graduating with a B.S. in electrical engineering in 1939, he worked with the Alabama Power Company and then served as an officer in the US Army Signal Corps in WWII. After the war he resumed work at the Alabama Power Company and in 1948 began work at the Georgia Tech Experiment Station. While working at the Experiment Station he earned a master's degree in electrical engineering at Tech in 1953. Mr. Flynt was an electrical engineer for Georgia Tech Research Institute for 30 years, where he was a pioneer in radar research. After retiring from GTRI he worked at Scientific Atlanta. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Lee Williams Flynt; daughters, Joyce Flynt Visne, Alice Flynt Talmage and her husband Greg; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, in Decatur, Georgia, on Saturday, June 23, at 2 p.m. with former pastor Rev. Larry T. Burgess officiating. Interment follows at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Clairmont Hills Baptist Church or to the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc.
