Mrs. Eleanor Hamlin Leedy, 83, of Decatur, passed away on Thursday, June 21, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. Eleanor was born in Dobson, NC to Sidney and Eva Hamlin on July 8, 1928. She was one of six children. After graduating from high school in Dobson, she went on and attended nursing school in Mt. Airy, NC, fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She married Robert Carr "Bob" Leedy and made their home in Danville, VA. Bob's career as a chemist in the textile industry caused them to relocate several times, but Eleanor managed to enjoy a long and fulfilling career as an obstetrical nurse. After retiring from Roane General Hospital in Spencer, WV as Obstetrical Department head nurse, Eleanor and Bob moved to Atlanta in 1997 to be closer to their daughters. Eleanor enjoyed shopping, playing bridge, gardening and spending time with her family. In her later years, she also enjoyed dancing and traveling with her long time companion Ted Petrides. She loved people, and her beauty, warmth and giving spirit touched the lives of all she met. Eleanor is preceded in death by her husband, Bob Leedy; brother, Howard Hamlin and sister, Thelma Whitaker. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands; Fran and Michael Martinez, Betsy and Steve Collins, grandson, Andy Martinez; sisters, Dorothy Hayes and Carolyn Badgett; brother, Marvin Hamlin all residing in NC. A memorial service will be held in her honor on Sunday, June 24 at 2:00 at A.S. Turner & Sons, 2773 North Decatur Road Decatur. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A.S.
