We celebrate the life of a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who passed quietly in her sleep at the age of 86 on October 11, 2007. Emily Thacker was a genteel southern lady who always put family and friends first. Funeral Arrangements are being made through A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home of Decatur. The family will receive friends Saturday, October 13, 2007 from 1:30 PM unti1 3:30 PM at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be held at the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons at 2:30 PM, Sunday, October 14, 2007 with Dr. Robert Walker officiating. A graveside service will follow in Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs. Born on May 27, 1921, in Buena Vista, Georgia, to parents, Nancy Munday Hart and Al Hart, she grew up and lived most of her life in Georgia. Ms. Thacker graduated from Berry College with a Masters Degree in English and also received a Law Degree from John Marshall School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia. Ms. Thacker was a long time member of Peachtree Baptist Church and was active in her community and civic organizations. She was the president of American Business Womens Association (ABWA) from 1974 to 1978. In 1950 she married Marion Eugene Thacker and had two children, Jeanne and Jermone (Jerry). Before his death in 1985 they celebrated 35 years of marriage. Ms. Thacker served the city of Atlanta for more than 20 years as a detective in the Atlanta City Police Department and retired in 1976 as a Lieutenant. She has the honor of being the first female detective in the nation. During the course of her career with the Atlanta City Police Department, Ms. Thacker won numerous awards for outstanding service and was well liked and respected by her co-workers. Ms. Thacker is preceded in death by her husband, Marion Eugene Thacker and her son, Al Jerome (Jerry) Thacker. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Manko of Snellville; three grandsons, Colin Cameron Manko of Snellville, Dewayne Marion Manko and his wife Daniella, and daughter Valentina of Manassas, Virginia, and grandson, Kevin Christopher Manko and his wife Fernanda of Centreville, Virginia.
