Emogene Clark

April 17, 1917 — February 4, 2008

Emogene Newman Clark passed away on February 4,2008, at her home in Decatur, Georgia, at the age of 90, surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of B. F. Clark, who worked for Southern Bell from 1934 until his death in 1967. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Larry White; grandchildren, Barbara J. Hubbard Davis and Emory W. "Brad" Hammock; and great-granddaughters, Rose, Carla, and Maya Davis, all of Decatur. Born in Omega, GA, in 1917, her family returned to her mother's home in Emerson, GA, after the death of her father in 1921. Orphaned at age 15, she graduated from Bass High School while living with her uncle James Gilstrap in Candler Park, then went on to receive a degree from Berry College. She was married in 1941 and moved around with the family for a couple of years before settling in Athens for 10 years, where she was a Girl Scout leader and beloved member of a local bridge club. In 1958, the family moved to Decatur. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Chamblee, Georgia, from 1968 until her retirement, and received much recognition for her outstanding work in the Quality Assurance Department. "Mama Jean," as she was called in later years, was devoted to caring for her family by way of wonderful cooking, motivating those who needed it, being an expert seamstress and entertaining all with her sharp wit and clever sense of humor. She was skilled at many kinds of handiwork, including embroidery, upholstery, making draperies, and especially crochets. Her cunning mastery of card games, word games, and crossword puzzles made her a tough but good-natured competitor. She frequently sang around the house and was always watching old movies and Braves baseball on TV .She loved gardening, and animals of any stripe, never allowing strays to go hungry. She fought the good fight. We shall all miss her so much. The family will receive friends at A. S. Turner Funeral Home in Decatur, GA on Friday, February 8, from, 12 P.M. to 1 P.M. with the funeral service following at 1:00 P.M. at the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons. She will be laid to rest beside her husband, at College Park Cemetery.
