Flora D. Hendrix

March 23, 1927 — July 9, 2015

Flora D. Hendrix passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Thursday July 9, 2015 following complications from congestive heart failure. She was born March 23, 1927 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. She was the ninth of eleven children born to her parents, Thomas H. Douglas, Sr. and Laura McNair Douglas. Flora moved to Atlanta in 1947 when she married Harry B. Hendrix and they had three children. She supported her husband's business with administrative responsibilities, but her first love was being a mother and homemaker. In the mid 1970s, she began working for Rich's at Greenbriar Mall in their linen department. Her competitive side showed itself there as she won many awards, including employee of the year. When Rich's transitioned to Macy's she continued with the company moving to their store at North DeKalb Mall and retired with over 25 years of service. Following her retirement, Flora rarely missed a Saturday afternoon matinee ushering at The Fox Theatre. She volunteered there for over 15 years. Flora loved plants and keeping her yard in Decatur in meticulous condition was very important to her. She made friends easily with her contagious laugh and her relationships were always lifelong friendships, many of whom were in her Sunday School class at Clairmont Presbyterian Church.

Flora is survived by her children Harry Douglas Hendrix, his wife Jane, Debra Hendrix Sanders, her husband Wayne, Beth Hendrix Blankenship, and her husband Earl. Her grandchildren Wes Hendrix, Christina Sanders-Rufenacht, Steven Sanders as well as her great grandchildren Adrielle and Paul Rufenacht were the joy of her life.

Flora's funeral service will take place in the chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons on Friday July 10, 2015 at 6:00 pm followed by a reception. Her burial will be at the Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield, South Carolina at 4:00 pm on Saturday July 11. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to express special thanks to Kenny Peek (her other favorite son), her family at Kingsbridge Retirement Center and to the staff at Hospice Atlanta for the kind and loving care she received.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Senior Adult Fellowship at Clairmont Presbyterian Church.

Feel free to leave the family your condolences via the guestbook provided.
