Frances Elizabeth Thomas

Thomas, Frances Elizabeth, 99, of Decatur, GA passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012. She was born June 13, 1912 in Troup County near present day Pine Mountain, GA where she spent her school years and graduated from Chipley High School in the same year with her brother, Paul Smith. She moved to Atlanta, attended business school and then went to work for Rich's Department Store as an executive secretary and buyer for approximately 24 years. She was married to Fred M. Thomas. They resided in Decatur, GA until his passing in 1986. She remained in their home until her passing. Frances was very active in her community, especially the First Baptist Church of Decatur where she joined in 1954, was active member of the Adelphia Sunday School Class, served as prayer leader, recording secretary and president. She also served several years as a volunteer "Candy Striper" at the local hospitals. Mrs. Thomas is survived by her brother, DeWitt Paul Smith of Atlanta, her 9 nieces and nephews: Donna Anderson of Ormond, FL, Tyrone Smith, of Homestead, FL, Charlene Hollingsworth of Marietta, GA, Billy Smith and Johnny Smith both of Stockbridge, GA, Dr. Gayle Janzen of Birmingham, AL., Tim Smith of Fayetteville, GA, Randy Smith of Gainesville, GA, Joy Swaney of Loganville, GA, unofficial adopted son, Jim Dean of Dallas, TX, a dear best friend, Tommy Kirkley of Ellenwood, GA and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons. Interment will follow at 4:30 P.M. in the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, Pine Mountain, GA. Friends may call from 12 Noon until service time.
