Frank Paul Spence

September 29, 1941 — January 20, 2019

Frank Paul Spence passed away at Emory Hospital on January 20, 2019 following a brief illness. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee on September 29, 1941 to the late Walter W. Spence Sr. and Alice L. Spence. He was preceded in death by his brothers Walter W. Spence Jr., George E. Spence, James P. Spence and Robert A. Spence.

Frank graduated from Nashville’s Father Ryan High School in 1959. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Peabody College (Vanderbilt University) and started teaching at St. Henry’s School. Later Frank would earn a Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia.

Like many of his generation, Frank moved to Atlanta in the 1960s to help build the capital of the New South. He served as the Director of Recreation and Parks for DeKalb County and then worked in the marketing department of the Atlanta Braves for many years. Frank would move on to serve as Vice President of Marketing for the Atlanta Falcons. Later in life, he started his own special events and parking company.

Frank enjoyed serving his local community. He helped establish Special Olympics Georgia in 1970 and the Tommy Nobis Center in 1977. Frank Spence also served on the Atlanta Sports Council, Peach Bowl Committee, Super Bowl XXVIII Planning Committee, The Georgia Democratic Party and many other charitable and special events throughout Atlanta.

Frank is survived by his loving family and devoted friends. In lieu of flowers, Frank’s family asks for memorial donations to Father Ryan High School. Please contact the Advancement Office at 615-269-7926. A funeral for Frank will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 26th at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 636 W. Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur GA 30030.
