George Ellwood Wascovich

January 8, 1922 — October 23, 2021

Rev. Dr. George E. Wascovich, age 99, of Atlanta, GA passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, October 23, 2021. He was born in Central City, PA, on January 8, 1922 to Mr. and Mrs. George and Bertha Wascovich.

He graduated with a B.A. from Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, TN. He received a Master of Divinity from Butler School of Divinity (now Christian Theological Seminary) and a Doctor of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, IN.

Prior to his retirement in 1989, he had served for 24 years as Senior Pastor of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Atlanta. He loved his parishioners and they loved him! Previously, he served for 10 years as Senior Pastor of the First Christian Church of Fort Wayne, IN. Prior thereto, he served for 10 years as Senior Pastor of the First Christian Church in Mobile, AL.

George was married to Alma Wascovich for 61 years until her passing in 2006. He was then fortunate to have found love a second time with Lee Wood. They spent 13 wonderful years together until her passing in 2019.

George was an avid golfer who played the game well into his 90s. He was a member of The Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, GA, where he achieved four hole-in-one’s, the last one at age 85. He possessed a great sense of humor, which he was known for expressing after golf games. He would often come back from a game with new jokes he couldn’t wait to share. He loved watching all sports, especially golf, the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Falcons, and college football.

He was a dedicated man of God who during his 44 years in ministry made time every week to visit and minister to his parishioners. Whether he was meeting with new church members in their homes, comforting the sick, visiting patients in hospitals after surgeries, spending time with the elderly, or visiting people in jail, he believed his calling was to be out ministering to the people, not just preaching from the pulpit. He loved his family dearly and was always willing to do anything he could to help all his children. He touched many lives and will be sorely missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife Alma Jordan Wascovich and his grandson Lance CPL Ryan Giese, USMC. He is survived by four children, including Connie Wascovich, Rev. Dr. Craig Wascovich (Sandy), Faith Wascovich (Connie ) and Kent Wascovich (Donna); two grandchildren, including Alison Whithead and her husband Mitchell and Jennifer Madden and her husband Jeremy; and three great-grandchildren, including Carson Teems, Emory Leopard, and Miah Madden.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am Sunday, October 31st at the First Christian Church of Atlanta, 4532 LaVista Rd., Tucker, GA 30084.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the George Wascovich Fund at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, IN; it helps support students preparing for the ministry.
