George Melton Harrison, Jr.

December 8, 1916 — February 27, 2005

George Melton Harrison, Jr., age 88, of Covington, GA, formerly of Decatur, GA, died February 27, 2005. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Susan Margaret (Maggie) Hendon Harrison, and his daughter Stephanie Harrison Young. He is survived by his daughter Deborah Harrison Sammons; sons Mike & wife Karen Harrison, and Pat Harrison; grandchildren Robb & wife Alison Young, Shannon Young & husband Robert Creasy, and Shay Young, and Lennon, Travis, and Tara Harrison; great grandchildren Gage, Marissa, Gannon, Gunnar Young, and Benjamin Carson Creasy. Mr. Harrison's accomplishments in life, beyond his success as a loving father and grandfather, were many. He served as confidential assistant to Admiral Ben Morrell, head of the SeaBees, and received a citation for outstanding performance from then Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal for his contributions to the war effort during WWII. In business, he was engaged in employee motivation for 40 years. In 1975, he founded George M. Harrison & Associates, Inc., a successful personnel motivational enterprise serving banks, electric co-ops, hospitals, and industrial firms throughout the southeast US. Prior to that he was Manager of National Account Sales for Noland Company, Inc., and held significant positions at other enterprises. He was an active civic leader in Newport News, VA, including: previous head of the American Red Cross campaign in VA; chairman of the Hilton Village Methodist Fund Drive; acted in fund drives for Community Chest, March of Dimes, New Port News Boy Club, Hampton Roads Boys Club, Boy Scouts of America, American Cancer Society, and the Heart Fund. He was an official of the Board of Managers of Riverside Hospital where he also held several significant administrative positions. He also served as executive secretary of the University of VA Development Fund. He and his family were long time active members of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Decatur, GA. Despite his many and varied accomplishments, the pride of Mr. Harrison's life was his family, his many friends, and his beloved Auburn Tigers. The funeral service will be held Thursday March 3, 2005 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons with Dr. Dan Rice officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove United Methodist Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Paradise Haven project at Covington Manor Nursing Home, care of C. L. Johnson, P.O.
