George R Hemenway

George R Hemenway, 73, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away at home on Friday March 28, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. George was born on December 25, 1940 in Rochester, New York to the late George W and Angela Donnelly Hemenway. At age 11 his family moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida. He was a graduate of Cocoa High School and graduated from the University of Florida where he received his Bachelor of Building Construction degree. He joined the Navy Reserves in 1958 and served on active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis.After graduating from college in 1965, George moved to Atlanta where he began his career in the construction field working for J.A. Jones. He then went to work for Ira Hardin Company, as Project Manager on numerous projects, including: Northlake Mall, Southlake Mall, Cumberland Mall and IBM Complex. In 1978 he joined Cecil Malone Company as Vice President. During his time there he oversaw many projects in Atlanta including: RJR Nabisco, Invesco and the Michael C. Carlos Museum. He later formed Hemenway, Inc. and was the contractor of Atlanta Union Mission and the renovation of the Shallowford Presbyterian Chapel. George especially enjoyed working with other contractors on projects for Glencastle Constructors, Inc. George was an Eagle Scout and later served as a leader for Webelos and Scout Troop 651. He loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing and camping. George also enjoyed building furniture, woodworking, his antique cars and anything that involved working with his hands. His loyalty, integrity and Christian faith have been an inspiration and example to his family and his many friends and colleagues. He was a member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church for 37 years where he served as an Elder and was involved with Buildings and Grounds, the Canoe Club and especially valued his time with the Thursday Morning Men's Prayer Breakfast. Time spent with his family was most important to him and he valued family above all else. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judy; his children, George W (Mary Beth) Hemenway of Tucker, Georgia, Craig Hemenway of Charleston, South Carolina and Kara (Brian) King of Concord, North Carolina; granddaughters, Betsy and Amanda King; his brothers, Donald (Anne) Hemenway, Peter (Bonnie) Hemenway, Alan (Lee) Hemenway and Jerry Hemenway; his sisters, Marilyn (David) Todd, Diane Hemenway and Janice (Steven) Jackson; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Priscilla Bowman. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Shallowford Presbyterian Church officiated by Rev. Christopher Henry and Rev. Robert Carroll, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Shallowford Presbyterian Church, 2375 Shallowford Road, NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30345.
