George Tyson Smith

April 26, 1926 — April 2, 2020

George Tyson Smith age 93 of Decatur passed away Thursday April 2, 2020. Ty was born April 26, 1926 in Grove Oak, AL to the late Elmer and Maude Tyson Smith. He was the second of nine children.

He moved to Atlanta in 1948 where he spent many years working in maintenance for Emory University. He learned numerous skills that would serve him well the rest of his life. In 1962 he and his wife started DeKalb Insulation Company, Inc., which they owned for 30 years. Ty believed in honesty and hard work. The word “can’t” was not part of his vocabulary. Ty was preceded in death by his parents as well as four brothers, Bobby, Ted, Wallace, and Eugene and four sisters, Dorothy Attaway, Gertrude Armstrong, Ann Lawson, and Montine Smith.

Ty’s family would like to give special thanks to The Fountainview Center for Alzheimer’s Disease for the excellent care he received the last three and a half years.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Rehoboth Baptist Church, Tucker, GA (www.rehoboth.org) or the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).

Ty Smith will be laid to rest in a private graveside service Monday, April 6, 2020 at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Tucker, GA.
