Grace Taylor Knapp

Grace Taylor Knapp passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 18, surrounded by her family. She was 88 years old. A longtime resident of Decatur, GA, she was born in 1926 in Mooreland, IN. Grace is survived by her daughter Melinda (Mindy) Hale and husband Rick of Lawrenceville, GA, and son John Knapp and wife Kelly of Holland, MI, as well as grandchildren Leah and Rick Hale; Amanda Schmidt and her husband Brian; Tracy, Charles, Mary and Ronnie Knapp; and great-granddaughter Sophia Schmidt. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Knapp and parents Ida and Francis Edward Taylor. A well-known artist, she specialized in oil portraits, many of which hang in homes and public places throughout the Atlanta area, including the Georgia State Capitol, universities and corporate boardrooms. Among her best-known works is a life-size portrait of golf legend Bobby Jones in the clubhouse of East Lake Country Club. Grace was a devout Christian who served her church in many capacities, most recently as a weekly volunteer for the "Sandwich Brigade" homeless ministry of Decatur Presbyterian Church. She prayed faithfully for family and friends, and was always quick to serve neighbors in need. She also served for many years as an audio editor for The Bible for You radio ministry. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 21, at 3 pm at Decatur Presbyterian Church in Decatur, GA. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Grace may be sent to Decatur Presbyterian Church's "Sandwich Brigade" Homeless Ministry: 205 Sycamore Street, Decatur, GA 30030.
