Hewlett Hall Maples

Hewlett Hall Maples, 88 of Acworth, GA, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on February 18, 2022, after a brief battle with pneumonia.  

Hugh, as he is known to family and friends, was born on July 15, 1933, in Mitchell County, GA, to Albert and Annie Kate Maples and was the oldest of three sons.  He honorably served his country in the Marines during the Korean War and took great pride in his military service, having penned his memories and experiences for a book his grandson published about Veterans for his Eagle Scout Project.  

After service, he met his wonderful and loving wife Marjorie Peacock at a gospel sing and they were married on Valentine’s Day in 1959.  Over the next eight years, they welcomed a daughter and two sons.  Hugh invited Jesus into his heart when he was 28 and was called to pastor Steadman Baptist Church in Tallapoosa, GA three years later.  He pastored several churches including Bridgeboro Baptist (Bridgeboro, GA), New Elm Baptist Church (Moultrie, GA), Harmony Baptist Church (Ashburn, GA), and Warwick Baptist Church (Warwick, GA).   Hugh was an avid golfer and enjoyed many hours on the golf course playing the game he loved and working as an ambassador after he retired from the ministry and accounting.

Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marjorie Maples; daughter, Cheryl Martin of Acworth, GA; two sons Steven Maples of Acworth, GA, and Glenn Maples of Atlanta, GA; grandson Matthew Martin of Pike Road, AL; brother Sydney Maples and sister-in-law Lou Ella of Colonial Beach, VA.

Services will be held on Sunday, February 27th at Poole Funeral Home located at 1970 Eagle Dr, Woodstock, GA, 30189.  The family will receive friends at 1 pm with the funeral to follow at 2 pm.  In memory of Hugh, remembrances can be made to St Jude Children’s Hospital.
