Homer Lee Cheek

Homer Lee Cheek, 93, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 7, 2009. A native of DeKalb County, he was born August 5, 1915, to Ina Akin Cheek and James Lee Cheek.  He called the "Oak Grove Community" his home for all of his 93 years. Homer Lee spent his early years helping in his father's dairy.  During WWII he worked with Georgia Power Co. Following the war, he and Grace opened Cheek's Grocery in the Oak Grove community. After working in the DeKalb Sheriff’s Office and the Solicitor's Office, he opened C & F Bonding Company. Homer Lee is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Grace Chewning Cheek and his sons, Timothy Keith Cheek and Alton L. Cheek, a sister, Ruby C. Kirkland. He later married Sara W. Needham Cheek, who also preceded him in death. He is survived by sons, Kenneth and Sandi Cheek, Flowery Branch, Harold and Willene Cheek, Snellville, and daughters-in-law, Betsy Burroughs, Clearwater, FL, and Sue Cheek, Lithonia; grandchildren, Scott Cheek, Lawrenceville, Sharon and Glen Ballew, Buford, Ryan and Kim Cheek, Rock Hill, SC, Taylor Cheek, Clearwater, FL, Brett Cheek, Cape Girardeau, MO, David and Delilah Cheek, Lithonia, Karen Cheek, Atlanta, Hal and Laura Cheek, Snellville, Cindy Cheek, Snellville; 12 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Sara Jolley, Conyers, Eloise and Claud Pounds, Decatur, Doris and Donald Nash, Decatur; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Special thanks to his caregivers, Jennifer Marlow, Beatrix Wilson and Cathy Lee. Funeral services will be held at Rehoboth Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 10 at 2 pm. Dr. Gil Watson, Rev. Bobby Smith and Rev. Rusty Womack officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens immediately following the service. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 9, from 4 to 7pm at A. S. Turner & Sons.
