Hugh Haralson Joyner

December 28, 1919 — June 3, 2014

Hugh Haralson Joyner died June 3, 2014. Born in Atlanta, GA to Frank M. Joyner and Mary Jean Edmondson Joyner, Hugh grew up on Washington Street where he could hear the lions roar in Grant Park as he fell asleep each night. He attended Bass Junior High and Boys High. He worked at the Atlanta public library for thirty cents an hour while attending Georgia Tech. Hugh majored in Industrial Management and graduated from Tech in 1943. He went immediately to Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the army. Hugh served in the European Theater during WWII in France (Normandy), Belgium, Germany and Austria. At the war's end, he began work with Delta airlines in Georgia where his supervisor was a certain Miss Dorothy Dot Travis. Hugh and Dot were married shortly thereafter and made their home in Decatur for over 65 years joined by Dot's sister, the late Marian Travis. Hugh spent his professional career in sales and service with Northern Pacific Railroad. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy Travis Joyner, and sister-in-law, Marian E. Travis. Hugh had an engaging personality and a quick sense of humor. He enjoyed people and telling stories from his life. He loved anything related to railroads and was devoted to Georgia Tech. A graveside committal with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. June 6 at the Decatur Cemetery followed by a service celebrating Hugh's life at 3:00 p.m. in the Little Chapel of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. Friends are also invited to a reception after the memorial service in the church's parlor. Gifts in Hugh's memory may be made to the Georgia Institute of Technology or Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory
