Dr. Jack Kenneth Hale, 81, of Atlanta died December 9, 2009.  He was born in Carbon Glow, Letcher County, Kentucky, October 3, 1928, the son of the late James Marion and Cora Kelly Hale. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Gene Hale, and a sister, Elizabeth Hale DuVall. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hazel Reynolds Hale.  He is also survived by his brother, James W. Hale and his wife Virginia of Bowling Green KY, and his brother-in-law, Thomas W. DuVall of Marshall NC.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.  He left eastern Kentucky in 1944 to attend Berea College in Berea KY.  After graduating from Berea, he attended Purdue University for his doctor of philosophy degree in mathematics.  Dr. Hale spent many years teaching and doing research in mathematics at Brown University, Providence RI and Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta GA.  Some of his awards are Chauvenet Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, British Carnegie Fellowship and Sigma XI sustained Research Award.  Some of his memberships are Corresponding Member of the Brazilian Academy of Science, Honorary Fellow of Royal Society of Edinburgh and Foreign Member Polish Academy of Science. He received honorary degrees from Ghent, Belgium; Stuttgart, Germany; University Tecnia of Lisboa, Portugal; Rostock, Germany and Cark University, Worcester, MA. One of his most rewarding accomplishments was working with forty-seven PHD students.
