Jack Turnell Mallory, Jr

September 9, 1940 — July 18, 2017

Jack Turnell Mallory, Jr., 76, of Decatur, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2017. Born September 9, 1940, in Atlanta, he was the son of the late Jack Turnell Mallory, Sr. and Hallie Sue Richardson Mallory. A social worker, counselor and educator for over 50 years, Jack developed an innovative program that trained members of the Atlanta Police Department to manage dangerous situations involving domestic violence. He was well respected for his insight as a counselor, and was known for his humor and warmth.

Jack was profoundly kind and a compassionate listener, and loved unconditionally. He lived a life of generosity and service. He and his beloved wife of 54 years (Pattie, who passed in February 2017) were active in community ministries for homeless women at First Presbyterian Church for many years. They opened their doors to foster children, family, and neighbors. Jack found God in the world around him and tried to see the divine in every person he encountered. He was devoted to his friends and family, and found something to laugh about every day. His bright eyes, his playful spirit, and his big bear hugs will be missed by all.

Jack is survived by his son, Michael Mallory and his wife, Susan; daughters, Katherine Mallory and Kimberly Vaughn and her husband, Byron Perkins; niece Jessica Thomason; grandchildren Mallory Vaughn, Halley Mallory, Isaiah Perkins, Will Mallory, and Amari Mallory.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held Sunday, August 6, 2017 at 2:30pm, at First Presbyterian Church, 1328 Peachtree St. Atlanta, 30309. We will tell stories and celebrate his life over ice cream following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests support for the First Presbyterian Church women’s shelter.
