James Houston Hughes

James (Jimmy) Houston Hughes, 74, of Stone Mountain, GA died November 19, 2009 of heart failure. He is survived by wife of 53 years, Elinor Gayle McAfee Hughes, 3 children and their families; Laura Hughes Rudie & Allan Rudie of Danville, IL, Amanda Hughes Price & Larry Price of Stone Mountain, GA, James David Hughes & Gaye Brewster Hughes of Tullahoma, TN, 9 grandchildren, Rebekah and David Rudie, Laura Elizabeth, Hannah, and Sarah Price, Anna, Bethany, Abigail and Nathan Hughes, Ismael Gullon, nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends. He was a member of Confederate Avenue Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA, where his grandmother Amanda Herndon Hughes was one of the founders in 1922. He served his Lord Jesus Christ as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and friend to widows and the poor. He was a graduate of Georgia State University, a real estate appraiser and consultant earning distinction with SRPA & SRA professional designations. He was past president of the Georgia Association of Assessing Officers, Chief Tax Assessor for DeKalb County, GA, and owner of Hughes and Associates, Certified Real Estate Appraisers. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 11 am in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons, with Rev. Allan Rudie, Rev. David Rudie and Rev. Larry Price officiating. Interment 4 PM, East Armuchee Baptist Church, near Villinow, GA. The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM Monday, at the funeral home. Everyone is invited to all services. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Settlers Memorial Cemetery Preservation, Inc., P.O. Box 1206, Pine Lake, GA 30072, a foundation Jimmy helped establish for the preservation of old cemeteries. A.S. Turner & Sons, Decatur, GA.
