Janet Pash Baber

January 11, 1933 — December 21, 2023

Jan Baber passed away peacefully on Thursday December 21, 2023 at Azalea Senior Care in Lawrenceville, GA just shy of her 91st birthday. She was born on January 11, 1933 in Bardstown, KY. She was the second of four children of John Wesley Pash and Eldora Grace Salmon Pash.

Raised in the coal mining town of Clinchco, VA, she was the captain of her high school basketball team. She graduated in 1955 from nursing school at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.

Jan raised her family mostly in Hopewell and Newport News, VA where she was a gourmet home cook and pretty wicked tennis player. When she could no longer play, you could find her in front of the TV for every Grand Slam tournament. She was also active in the medical auxiliary for many years.

Jan put her nursing skills to good use by drawing blood at the Red Cross blood drives. She spent time performing insurance physicals and hearing aid testing. And in her later years, she was a beloved nurse at Greenwood Elementary School in Newport News. After retirement she moved to Atlanta and was a resident of Kingsbridge Retirement Community for about ten years.

Jan was an awesome mother and is survived by her son, Bruce Allenby Baber, Jr (Lupita) and daughter, Sydney Lee Kelly, and her adored grandchildren Sofia, Jordan, and Bryce. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, David R. Kelly and her ex-husband and father of her children, Bruce Allenby Baber.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association in memory of her son-in-law or the Dementia Society of America.
