Jean Bodin Ray

June 13, 1927 — February 4, 2013

Jean Christine Bodin Ray, age 85, died peacefully surrounded by her daughters at the place of her birth, Emory University Hospital, on Monday morning, February 4, 2013, after a brief battle with lung cancer. She was raised in Druid Hills on Springdale Road, NE Atlanta, in the family house designed by her father, Swedish-born Architect Daniel H. Bodin of Frazier and Bodin, who emigrated from Svanå Bruk, Västmanland, for his bride, Adelia Forncrook Bodin, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and their children, Daniel Lawrence Bodin and Jean. Jean attended Druid Hills School, Westminster Academy and was a graduate of Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri. Surviving Jean is her devoted husband of 62 years, Navy Commander Thomas Broadfield Ray of Americus and Atlanta, and their three loving daughters, Cristine Ray Connelly of Atlanta, Patricia Ray Stanley of Nashville, and Lisa Ray O'Shea of Lawrenceville; her nieces, Dana Jean Bodin of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, and Cynthia Dale Bodin of Westpoint, Indiana; her nephew Daniel Lawrence Bodin, Jr. of Avon Lake, Ohio; and her loving and cherished grandchildren, Keegan Thomas Ray O'Shea, Katherine Olivia O'Shea, Mary Christina O'Shea, Thomas Patrick Ray O'Shea, Callie Elizabeth Connelly and C. Duncan Connelly, Jr.In Georgia, she attended First Baptist Church of Sandy Springs for eight years, Dunwoody Baptist Church for thirty-one years and Smokerise Baptist Church for four years; at all she was active in the choirs and Sunday School. She loved to travel, and visiting beaches all over the world and capturing them and everyday life in picturesque locations in her paintings and pastels were favorite activities. She never stopped learning and enjoyed taking classes to learn new things. It Is Well With My Soul and I'll Fly Away were two of her favorite songs. She and Tom are loved by all at Park Springs Community and her vibrant, creative, and joyous, friendly spirit will live on in her wonderful artwork and the friendships she cultivated with everyone she met. She will be greatly missed, a true steel magnolia who truly loved life and and lived it to the fullest. When we all get to Heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be; when we all see Jesus, we'll and shout for victory. Goodbye, Jean, we love you and cherish the impact you have on our lives, the love and friendship you showed to all, and your strong, positive spirit will live on in us. A Celebration of her Life will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at Park Springs Community at Stone Mountain, Georgia at 1:00 o'clock p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Park Springs Communities for an Art Fund to be created by her daughters in her memory.
