Jewell Dean Howell Sweeney

Jewell Dean Howell Sweeney, 92, of Rome, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2018. Born July 9, 1925, in Miller Creek, Kentucky, she was the youngest of 9 and daughter of the late Charley and Stanley Neal Howell. Jewell spent her career as a Registered Nurse and mother. She enjoyed gardening and collecting elephants and loved children and animals. She was a volunteer at St. Thomas More Catholic Church and with DEAM in Decatur.

Jewell is survived by her son, Michael Sweeney, III and his wife, Monique; two daughters, Mary Cox and her husband, John, and Cornelia Hughes; four granddaughters, Laura McAvoy and her husband, Cris, Stephanie Alexander and her husband, DJ, Daphne Johnston and her husband, Luke, and Shelly Sanders and her husband, Larry; six grandsons, Timothy and his wife, Amy, David Meyer, Jeffrey and his wife, Molly, Gregory and his wife, Sara, and Michael Harris and his wife, Amanda; nine great-granddaughters, Lilly Alexander, Sarah Harris, Elora Sweeney, Kendall Sweeney, Stella Sweeney, Tabyn McAvoy, Savanna Johnston, Madi Armstrong, and Lexie Lorentson; four great-grandsons, Harris Alexander, Trent and Trevor Johnston, and Evan Sanders; half-sister, Ruby; and many more loving family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, Michael J. Sweeney, Jr.; son-in-law, Chris Hughes; her siblings, Ella, Buck, Tom, Earl, Carrie, Ruth, Melvin, and David; and half-siblings Galena, Charles, and Kenneth.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home. A service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, July 1, in the chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons with interment to follow at Decatur Cemetery.
