John Cullen Stevens

October 28, 1935 — May 31, 2020

John Cullen Stevens was born in Umatilla FL on October 28, 1935 to Cullen Homer Stevens and Isabel Culpepper Stevens. His parents divorced at a young age and his mother relocated to New Orleans LA. There he meet life long friends Jim Powell and Warren Milan.

“Steve” as he was known to his friends, enlisted in the army in 1952 and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from the army, he returned to his home in New Orleans in 1955. He attended LSU and worked as a taxi cab driver. He married the love of his life in December of 1963, Sara Armstrong. Together they would have 2 children.

They moved from New Orleans for Steve’s career as a salesman to San Antonio in 1971. They then moved to Dallas, Albuquerque, Memphis, Deland FL and finally Atlanta when they found out they would be grandparents. Steve is preceded in life by his parents, his wife of 41 years Sara A Stevens and his brother in law Albert Armstrong (Genelle) who recently passed in April of 2020 in NOLA.

His legacy will live on through his son Mark C Stevens of Austin TX, daughter Michelle S Kehres and her husband Bob Kehres, granddaughter Kelly Kehres and grandson Robby Kehres of South Forsyth County GA, and nephew Eddie Armstrong and niece Terri Armstrong-Shields of Metairie LA. Recently, thanks to ancestry.com, Steve found out he had a half brother, James (Jim) Wingate. He met him for the 1st time with his wife June and daughters, Kim, Kelly and Katie of Columbia SC in early 2019.

Steve was a 50 year master mason in the Pythagoras Masonic Lodge #41 in Decatur GA and a Shriner of the Hella Temple of Dallas TX. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Steve enjoyed photography and shared many pictures with his family over the years. He was also a gun lover and enjoyed hunting in his younger years and camping with his family.

Steve will have a Masonic Funeral and will be interred at the GA National Cemetery in Canton GA with his wife Sara. This will happen on July 11th. Please contact his daughter Michelle at mkehres@att.net for more details.
